01. Museo de Arte de Ponce

The Museo de Arte de Ponce is the biggest and most renowned artwork museum in the Caribbean. It houses more than 4500 items of European art made by artists from Latin America, dating from the 14th to the 20th century. The Museum’s idea was initiated in 1956, when Luis A. Ferre traveled to Europe and gathered a variety of European artifacts, including numerous Pre-Raphaelite pieces. This inspired Ferre to create a plan to build a museum in Ponce. The city of Ponce, where he was born. Based on the suggestions of two experts in the field – Julius S. Held, an expert in Rubens as well as the professor of Art History at Barnard College and Columbia University, and Rene Taylor, an art and architecture fan and professor from The University of Granada, Yale and Columbia and Yale. Ferre created a collection of works of art based on their worth, not their fame.

The 3rd January of 1959 was when Ferre inaugurated the Museum at the house located at 70 Cristina Street in Ponce at the Centro Cultural de Ponce, featuring an exhibit of 72 artworks. The original works are in the Museum to this day. As time went by and the Museum gained acclaim, new paintings became part of the Museum’s collection.

03. Casa Blanca Museum

07. Fortín Conde de Mirasol
